Our Story

North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC) formerly known as Cane & Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC) started in the year 2000 as a centre for implementing the UNDP project “Cane and Bamboo Technological Upgradation and Networking Project” with UNIDO as the implementing agency. UNIDO exited in March 2004 on conclusion of the project.

The project executed by CBTC was adjudged as one of the best project of UNIDO in India by the Independent Evaluation Team of the UN. In a meeting held on 30th September 2003 at Raj Bhavan, Guwahati under the Chairmanship of the then Governor of Assam & Chairman (NEC), CBTC was identified to be the nodal Agency for implementation of “North Eastern Regional Bamboo Mission” (NERBaM) of the NEC. CBTC registered as a society on 21st July, 2004 with Secretary, NEC as its Chairman with members from NEC and Mission Directors of NE State Bamboo Missions in the Governing Body.

The National Bamboo Mission (NBM) was launched in December 7, 2006, where CBTC had prepared the DPR for the Ministry of Agriculture, GOI. CBTC has been functioning as the Bamboo Technical Support Group (BTSG) of the NBM since inception.

The second phase of UNIDO Project –

Promoting Livelihoods in North Eastern India: The Cane and Bamboo Networking Project was launched by then Minister of DoNER & Chairman, NEC at UN House, New Delhi on 9th April, 2008 in presence of the then Director General, UNIDO. The NEC was one of the main stakeholder in this project and Secretary, NEC was the Chairman of the Project Steering Committee.

In December 2008, Experts from CBTC went to China for Technology Transfer in making bamboo scrimber boards using indigenous bamboo from Tripura and successfully produced Bamboo Flooring Boards and Bamboo Decking. It was funded by the Tripura Forest Development Corporation, Govt. Of Tripura. 

Experts from CBTC are members for IMP development work for the second semester (for CTS Bamboo Works) at NIMI Chennai, under the Director, DGE&T, New Delhi. Experts from CBTC have imparted trainings in Bhutan, Nepal, East Timor, Ghana and Ethopia apart from training imparted to various foreign teams in CBTC Campus. Many Architects and Designers from India and abroad have done short assignments with CBTC as part of learning and sharing process.
